When taking your kids on holiday, it's worth remembering that they may be playing in an unfamiliar environment and that there will be potential hazards. Help keep your children safe on holiday with these tips from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

On the beach

  • however calm and tranquil a beach may look, there can be hidden dangers

  • check the tide table before going swimming or ask the lifeguards

  • find out what warning signs and flags mean and ensure that young children are constantly supervised

At the hotel

  • when you arrive at your hotel, ask the staff if there are any local hazards such as ponds within the hotel grounds, or nearby cliffs

  • have a look at the swimming pool to see if it's fenced off. Read any safety notices around the pool and obey them. Remember that babies under the age of four months should not be swimming at all, as they will not have had the correct vaccinations

  • check the stairwells around your hotel room, as they're unlikely to have stair gates

  • if you have a room with a balcony, check the height and width of any railings

  • be aware of any sharp-edged furniture in your room

  • if there are plastic bags in the wastepaper bins, it may be worth taking them out

  • finally, it's advisable to pack a first-aid kit. This should include plasters, baby paracetamol, re-hydration salts, as well as a good supply of high-factor sunscreen (at least SPF15) and after-sun lotion
